Presence and participations

Edison, a leading player

Edison is the second largest company in the Italian electricity market and the third player in the country’s gas sector. EDF directly owns 19.36% of Edison's capital and 50% of Transalpina di Energia (TdE), which in turn owns a 61.28% stake in Edison. Through these direct and indirect shareholdings, EDF controls 50% of Edison capital. In 2005, EDF signed agreements with A2A (formerly AEM Spa) for the control of Edison.

Other subsidiaries and joint venture: Fenice, Siram, EDF EN Italia

EDF owns 100% of Fenice, a company offering energy and environmental services, primarily to the industrial sector, but also to tertiary sector local authorities.

Through Dalkia and Dalkia International, EDF also owns 50% of Siram, a company providing energy and environmental services to municipalities, administrative buildings, hospitals and industrial sites.

EDF EN Italia, 95%-owned by EDF Energies Nouvelles, has activities in the renewable energies sector, namely wind power and photovoltaic.

Nuclear energy

EDF is taking an active role in promoting the return of nuclear power to Italy. In July 2009, within the framework of the nuclear cooperation agreement signed by Italy and France in February of the same year, Enel and EDF established the joint venture Sviluppo Nucleare Italia Srl (SNI) in which the two partners have an equal stake. The role of SNI is to carry out feasibility studies with a view to building at least four European Pressurized Reactors (EPR) in Italy. Once the feasibility studies are complete and the investment decisions taken, specific investment companies will be set up to build and operate the plants. These companies will be controlled by Enel and EDF, but they will be open to other potential investors.
